Benefits of Choosing FRP

  • Durable – with an expected 100-year design life
  • Inert – fully resistant to rot, rust and corrosion
  • Resistant to termites and acid sulfate soils
  • Lightweight, making it safer to handle, transport and install
  • Modular by design so can be assembled off-site and craned or trucked into place saving you onsite time and expenses whilst reducing weather impacts to your project
  • Cost effective – with reduced maintenance and replacement cycles resulting in significant savings over the lifetime of the structure
  • Non-leaching, so will not release harmful substances into the environment making it suitable for areas of high conservation value
  • Plus structures made from FRP contribute to decarbonisation in construction and reducing global warming through less embodied carbon

Designing an FRP Pedestrian Bridge

Our FRP pedestrian bridges and clip-on walkways or cycleways are designed for Australian and New Zealand codes, and conditions.

  • Designs can incorporate requirements for mobility or disability access where necessary
  • Standard 5kPa pedestrian load with 1-4t. service vehicle load dependent on decking selection
  • Girder Bridge: 6-11 m span
  • Light (riveted) truss bridge: 10-18m span
  • Heavy (bolted) truss bridge: 10-40m span

Australian Code Compliance

We have developed design methodologies for composite pedestrian bridges from the following standards:

  • AS 1657 – Design for access and mobility
  • AS 2156 – Walking tracks, infrastructure design
  • AS1170 – Structural design actions

The Eurocomp design code and handbook design of composite structures differs slightly from that of traditional materials, in that the ‘serviceability’ criteria generally dominates the design process. Typically, traditional materials are designed primarily for strength, and ‘serviceability’ checks are performed. But due to the low Modulus of Elasticity of FRP profiles compared to steel for example, structures are designed to meet the stiffness criteria and as a result contain large strength reserves.

Wagners CFT also meets the international management standards for:

  • Occupational Health & Safety ISO 45001
  • Environment ISO 14001
  • Quality ISO 9001

FRP Composite Pedestrian Bridges

Our composite pedestrian bridges and other structures can be supplied to the construction site as fully or partially pre-assembled, in kit form, or for full on-site assembly. Your project may include multiple components from stairs, platforms, ramps, decking (or grating) to boardwalks.

Maintenance

Our composite structures are uniquely suited to withstand the harshest environments while providing a low maintenance, long life asset. FRP is a durable material with an expected 100-year design life. Our pedestrian bridges and clip-on walkways have repeatedly shown their unique durability and strength, perfect for fresh or saltwater rivers.

A key advantage of FRP infrastructure is its reduced ongoing maintenance requirements in comparison with steel and timber. This is often expressed as the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a structure.

What makes FRP the right choice?

At Wagners CFT, we use a pull winding process known as ‘pultrusion’ to create our FRP structural profiles . These sections resemble the geometry and shape of traditional circular and square hollow sections, but they’re made from fibreglass reinforcements and vinyl ester resins. Fibreglass reinforced polymer is an incredible high strength material that is stronger than steel and meets all stiffness criteria; with Wagners CFT FRP structural profiles achieving an Elastic Modulus of 40 (E40) which is well above the competition.

And when it comes to strength, our glass ratio is unbeatable – at 76% glass. This makes our pultruded FRP structural profiles one of the world’s strongest. Wagners CFT have established a core group of primary raw material suppliers from around the globe to enable us to create the strongest FRP structural profiles for customers while at the same time maximising cost efficiency.

Wagners CFT is at the cutting edge of manufacturing innovative structural composite sections. We use a unique pull-winding process that can substitute steel, metal, aluminium and wood in infrastructure projects or engineering applications effectively.

After pultrusion is complete we have our structural profiles in hollow circle, square or rectangle shapes. We then transform these during post-processing into angles, i-beams, c-channels and so forth, to offer a comprehensive range of structural profiles.

The final stages involve coating all products with a UV resistant layer, bonding, drilling, inserting, and assembly. This process ensures our FRP products are engineered to perfection and ready to stand the test of time.

Working with Wagners CFT

When you work with Wagners CFT you can choose to use your own designer and construction team to complete your project; or you can decide to utilise our FRP experts from project design right through to installation.

Wagners CFT does possess a full in-house design and certification team, and we can work closely with clients, giving detailed instructions, to ensure a robust, aesthetically pleasing FRP pedestrian bridge or clip-on walkway that will provide decades of service.

From providing necessary and safe pedestrian access in suburban areas to creating a better trail experience in national parks our pedestrian bridges offer constructability, durability and versatility in all conditions and are available in many colours and styles.
