Watch how Principal Contractors SMC Marine completely changed the look of Lake Orr at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast in Queensland with the renewal of a tired old timber boardwalk.
How great does the 447-metres Wagners Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) boardwalk look on Lake Orr near Varsity Lakes Hospital and Bond University.
Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT) designed the boardwalk for City of Gold Coast and supplied the FRP structural profiles for Principal Contractor SMC Marine.
The boardwalk is set to provide a critical link between business precincts, community services and residential properties… And will be the ideal route for a leisurely stroll, run or cycle!
FRP is the perfect solution for this project because it’s:
- Durable – with an expected 100 year design life
- Chemically inert – will not rot, rust or corrode
- Resistant to termites and acid sulfate soils
- Non-leaching, so perfect for marine applications
- Lightweight, making it safer to handle, transport and install
- Modular by design
The $3.6 million project included replacement of the old timber piles and substructure (bearers and joists) with Wagners FRP, together with the replacement of the timber decking boards in favour of marina modwood composite decking.
Light poles were installed along the entire stretch of waterfront to provide adequate lighting at nighttime; and handrail fencing was installed on the waterside of the boardwalk as per Austroad standards.
Community benefits through the boardwalk renewal include improved safety, surface and durability together with Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) compliance for people with limited mobility and reduced maintenance.
Join Wagners CFT as we watch part of the boardwalk renewal from demolition through to completion!
