Semaphore Park beach near Adelaide in South Australia is now more accessible to all beachgoers thanks to the completion of a new Wagners CFT Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) beach access ramp off Port Malcolm boardwalk.

Working closely with the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club, City of Charles Sturt began construction in March 2024 and completed the project by May 2024 with the ramp designed by Struktura (now Drew Rudd Engineers) and installed by CAMCO (SA) Pty Ltd.

The 41m ramp significantly enhances connectivity between the reserve and the beach, providing easier access for everyone, especially those with disabilities.  It also supports several key programs being offered through the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club including the Seabirds Nippers, Silver Salties and Accessible Beaches programs.

FRP is the perfect solution for the accessibility ramp at Port Malcolm because it’s:

  • Durable – with a 100-year design life
  • Inert – so will not rot, rust or corrode
  • Cost effective – through reduced maintenance/replacement cycles
  • Resistant – to termites and acid sulfate soils

The project underscores City of Charles Sturts commitment to strengthening community ties and continually improving accessibility and inclusion through supporting individuals with disabilities and ensuring they and their caregivers can fully participate in all aspects of life on offer throughout the city.
