Newcastle Memorial Walk is a pedestrian boardwalk in the coastal city of Newcastle in New South Wales built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli. As well as honouring the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers during World War 1, this date also marks the commencement of steel making in Newcastle; the ANZAC memorial walk was built using 64 tonnes of stainless steel for this reason.
Designed by EJE Architects and constructed by Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT) and TLB consulting the Newcastle Memorial Walk also utilises modern materials like Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP), which was manufactured by Wagners CFT at its Wellcamp facility near Toowoomba in Queensland.
Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is the perfect materials for this project because it is:
- Durable with an expected 100-year design life
- Chemically inert, so will not rot, rust or corrode despite the challenging coastal environment and frequent vicious storms
- Non-leaching so safe for use in community structures and in sensitive environments like these coastal cliff faces
- Resistant to acid sulfate soils and termites
- Plus City of Newcastle will benefit from choosing FRP for the Memorial Walk for decades to come through reduced ongoing maintenance and replacement cycles
