In 2013, Wagners were approached by the Lizard Island community off the coast of Queensland north of Cooktown, to design and supply a new Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) boardwalk to replace an old timber structure that had reached the end of its serviceable life. The new boardwalk is approximately 70-metres in length and was constructed with Wagners FRP which was manufactured in Queensland at their Wellcamp facility, and a recycled plastic decking ensuring this boardwalk will be around for a long time.

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is the perfect solution for the Lizard Island project because its:

  • Durable with a 100-year design life
  • Chemically inert – so won’t rot, rust or corrode
  • Resistant to termites, marine borers and acid sulfate soils
  • Non-leaching so safe for us in sensitive environments and areas of environmental importance
  • PLUS…Cook Shire Council will benefit from choosing FRP over traditional materials for decades to come through reduced ongoing maintenance costs and replacement cycle of the structure

Visitors to Lizard Island value it for so many different reasons including its remoteness, wilderness, unspoilt beauty, fishing, accessible picturesque reefs, diverse and unique coral assemblages and a safe anchorage.
