Bluewater Trail in Mackay, Queensland is a shared pedestrian boardwalk and cyclepath around the city, directly linking local recreational facilities including the Botanic Gardens, Sandfly Creek Environmental Walk, Catherine Freeman Walk, the three-tiered Bluewater Lagoon swimming facility, Bluewater Quay and Iluka Park All Abilities Playground.

Constructed from Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP), Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT) broke new ground on this project with a newly developed technique whereby they could drive composite piles directly into the ground with conventional driving rigs.

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is the perfect solution for this project because of its proximity to the Pioneer River and coastline with its salt rich sea spray.  FRP is:

  • Durable – with a 100-year design life
  • Chemically inert, so will not rot, rust or corrode
  • Resistant to termites and acid sulfate soils
  • Non-leaching so safe for use in community area and areas of high conservation value
  • PLUS…Mackay Regional Council will reap the benefits of choosing FRP over traditional materials for decades to come through reduced maintenance and replacement cycle costs
