This is Wagners CFT’s second pontoon structure, it is 40 meters in length and 4 meters in width. The owners of this pontoon were sick and tired of pontoons that don’t last, their previous concrete pontoon was only about 10 years old and was starting to fall apart. They chose to have the new pontoon built by Wagners CFT for a pontoon structure that they don’t have to replace so quickly. The pontoon is design for upto 12 boat to dock and refuel and also designed to withstand the North Queensland elements.

Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is the perfect solution for marine infrastructure projects like the Cooktown Pontoon because it’s:

  • Durable – with a 50-year design life
  • Chemically inert – will not rot, rust, or corrode
  • Resistant – acid sulfate soils, termites and marine borers
  • Strong than steel
  • Lightweight – easy to install and transport
  • Modular – can be assembled off site and craned into place

Cooktown is located at the mouth of the Endeavour River on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula facing the Great Barrier Reef.  Founded in 1874 during the Palmer River gold rush, its population peaked at 30,000 in 1876 but declining in 1885 when gold production dropped.  Some sugar, citrus fruits, livestock and tin ore are produced in the area and some tourist facilities have been developed.  The town has a small airport and is linked by the Mulligan Highway to Cairns 190km south.
